Chapter 8
Mick tossed and turned as he slept, reliving the memories of the Meridian cruiser and Drakkarus. It wasnât often that he would dream of either of them, and itâd been much less frequently in the last few years but, when he did, his thoughts and visions still fuelled his hatred into a raging inferno inside of him. He couldnât even remember how many times heâd killed Drakkarus in his dreams, nor the ways in which heâd done it, but the visions still haunted him from time to time.
âYour sleep time is up, Mick,â Cassie called out, as she stood in the doorway of Mickâs sleep chamber.
Mick, startled out of his slumber, opened his eyes briefly and moaned slightly.
âCâmon, sleepy head, I fixed up some breakfast.â
âYeah?â Mick replied, as he rolled over and looked towards her.
It was still dark in his sleep chamber, but he could see Cassieâs graceful silhouette at the end of the room, the corridor lights behind her dimly outlining her figure. He couldnât see her face, and for a moment, her dark figure looked almost ominous, standing there in the doorway.
âLights, Irene,â he instructed, as he sat up on the bed and pushed off the white covers.
âHope you slept well, Mick,â Cassie said, as she entered the room, walked over to his closet and picked out some clothes for him.
âLike a baby,â he lied.
He swung his feet to the floor and rubbed his head, breathing deeply, as Cassie, with clothes in hand, came over and sat next to him on the bed. She put the clothes in his lap and began rubbing his neck and shoulders.
âOh yeah, that feels nice,â Mick said, enjoying the light massage. âSo whatâre you cooking, kid? I can smell it from here.â
âIâm sure youâll like it, Mick,â she answered, with a smile.
âWhatever it is, it sure smells good,â he complimented, as he stood and pulled on the pants sheâd placed in his lap.
He stood in front of her and buttoned up his jeans, then grabbed the black shirt sheâd selected for him and pulled it over his head, while Cassie watched silently. Sheâd actually felt slightly awkward, the few times that Mick had been almost naked around her, but still was unable to resist the urge to subtly check out his physique. Though she didnât exactly realize an attraction for the man old enough to be her father, her curiosity always seemed to get the best of her, and she found herself stealing the odd quick peek.
âHow do I look?â Mick asked, noticing her brief glances.
âWonderful, of course⦠I picked those clothes out for you,â she said, smiling, as she stood up.
âI need to go use the lavatory,â he stated, motioning back behind him.
She nodded as he went to do his business.
âCome out, whenever youâre ready, and breakfast should be almost done,â she stated, as she walked back towards the galley.
Mick didnât reply.
Cassie walked briskly back through the corridor, taking in the smell of the food she had prepared. She walked
